My sense of urgency is all-consuming. My sense of urgency to touch hearts and allow God to lead people to Jesus. My sense of urgency has, as someone has told me,”has become an obsession”.
Can you become too obsessed with Jesus?
In Crazy Love by Francis Chan Chapter Eight, Chan tells us what someone who is obsessed with Jesus looks like. I’m not sure if I’m violating copyright laws. But…
“People who are obsessed with Jesus give freely and openly without censure. Obsessed people love those who hate them and who can never love them back.”
“People who are obsessed with Jesus aren’t consumed with their personal safety and comfort above all else. Obsessed people care more about God’s kingdom coming to this earth than their own lives being shielded from pain or distress.”
“People who are obsessed with Jesus live lives that connect them with the poor in some way or another. Obsessed people believe that Jesus talked about money and the poor so often because it was really important to Him.
1 John 2:4-7 ESV says, “Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard.”
Matthew 16:24-26 ESV tells us, “Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?”
“Obsessed people are more concerned with obeying God than doing what is expected or fulfilling the status quo. A person who is obsessed with Jesus will do things that don’t always make sense in terms of success or wealth on this earth.”
“A person who is obsessed with Jesus knows that the sin of pride is always a battle. Obsessed people know that you can never be “humble enough,” and so they seek to make themselves less known and Christ more known.”
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
“People who are obsessed with Jesus do not consider service a burden. Obsessed people take joy in loving God by loving His people.
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Matthew 13:44 ESV.
“By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.” John 15:8 ESV.
“People who are obsessed with God are known as giver, not takers. Obsessed people genuinely think that others matter as much as they do, and they are particularly aware of those who are poor around the world.
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. … (James 2:14-26).”
“A person who is obsessed thinks about heaven frequently. Obsessed people orient their lives around eternity; they are not fixed only on what is here in front of them.”
“A person who is obsessed is characterized by committed, settled, passionate love for God, above and before every other thing and every other being.”
“People who are obsessed are raw with God; they do not attempt to mask the ugliness of their sins or their failures. Obsessed people don’t put it on for God; He is their safe place, where they can be at peace.”
“People who are obsessed with God have an intimate relationship with Him. They are nourished by God’s Word throughout the day because they know that forty minutes on Sunday is not enough to sustain them for a whole week, especially when they will encounter so many distractions and alternative messages.”
“A person who is obsessed with Jesus is more concerned with his or her character than comfort. Obsessed people know that true joy doesn’t depend on circumstances or environment; it is a gift that must be chosen and cultivated, a gift that ultimately comes from God.”
“A person who is obsessed with Jesus know that the best thing he can do is be faithful to his Savior in every aspect of his life, continually saying “Thank You!” to God. An obsessed person knows there can never be intimacy if he’s is always trying to pay God back or work hard enough to be worthy. He revels in his role as a child and friend of God.” James 1:2-4 ESV.
Chan tells us the whole point of believers is that we should be completely obsessed with Jesus and His path for us.
Luke tells us in 10:27 ESV, “And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
Merriam Webster defines obsession: 1. a state in which someone thinks about someone or something constantly or frequently especially in a way that is not normal; 2. someone or something that a person thinks about constantly or frequently; 3. an activity that someone is very interested in or spends a lot of time doing.
I’m obsessed with Jesus my Lord and Savior!
I’m obsessed with leading people to Jesus!
I’m obsessed and you know what!?
I’m proud of it!
Jesus has saved me and I will continue to do everything I can to tell the world of my great love for Him!
